Packages: Te Puia
Te Puia Guided Tour
Te Puia Daytime Experience tours run hourly from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm in summer (9.00 am to 4.00 pm in winter). Many of the guides you meet can link themselves to Rotorua’s earliest guides and the stories they relay have been handed down for generations.
Your tour begins at the main entrance, where twelve monumental carvings reach skywards, representing twelve celestial guardians. Visit the Kiwi House before moving on to Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley. Here you can explore this unique geothermal reserve with thermal activity ranging from boiling mud pools to the world famous 30 metre (100 foot) Pohutu geyser, which erupts up to 20 times a day.
Then it’s on to the Carving and Weaving Schools. Te Wananga Whakairo Rakau is where the prestigious art of carving is taught by Master Carvers. And Te Rito, the weaving school, trains students in the art and skills of weaving. Watch the carvers and weavers as they carry out the traditions of their Maori ancestors.
Te Puia Guided Tour & Cultural Performance
Enjoy a guided tour of Te Puia before your 45 minute Cultural Experience.
Your cultural performance starts with a Powhiri (ceremonial welcome) and Hongi (ceremonial greeting) which is the gentle pressing of noses symbolising the joining of two life forces creating an atmosphere of friendship and unity.
Then enjoy a Kapa haka (cultural performance) which celebrates the very best of Maori performing arts and Titi torea (stick game) before the Haka (challenge) and Waiata-a-ringa (action song) where hand and body actions accompany songs, portraying traditional stories and legends in dance.
Te Po Indigenous Evening Experience
Te Po is Te Puia’s evening cultural experience. It is a feast of storytelling, entertainment and Maori Cuisine.
Experience an authentic Maori welcome. When you visit Te Puia at night, you enjoy an indepth experience of the customs and traditions of Maori, with a traditional powhiri (Maori welcoming ceremony), a warrior’s challenge and a full kapa haka (Maori performing arts) concert.
You then enjoy a first-class Maori feast. Feeding guests is regarded by Maori as an honour and a sign of a tribe’s mana (standing), so a sumptuous banquet is provided during the evening. This banquet combines contemporary cuisine with a traditional hangi (earth-cooked oven meal), where kai (food) is steam-cooked by hot rocks in the earth, giving it a delicious smokey flavour.
Then enjoy the illuminated thermal valley. Following dessert, you will be transported by ‘people movers’ to enjoy the spectacular lighting of the Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley and wander around the illuminated natural attractions, while enjoying more Maori-inspired delicacies and a hot drink.
