Set amidst a landscape of fascinating geothermal activity, hot thermal springs and bubbling mud pools is the Living Maori village of Whakarewarewa. This is where the survivors of the devastating eruption of the volcano Mt Tarawera came in 1886.

Whakarewarewa Thermal Village & Full Hangi Experience
Enjoy a guided tour & cultural show at Whakarewarewa followed by a Hangi experience.
Hangi simply means “food cooked in the ground or an earth oven”. Using the gift of the geothermal activity when the ground gives way, a box is made above the newly created vent and a lid is placed on top. Food is then placed inside the box to steam and cook the food, this type of hangi is traditional within the village but not to Maori in general.
Your hangi consists of two meats, vegetables, bread stuffing & dessert – all cooked in the geothermal steam and hot springs.
